Less Details

As vehicles evolve into perception-rich systems, the ability to reliably integrate data from multiple sensors becomes mission-critical. Yet, decentralized fusion architectures—key to modular and scalable E/E systems—face computational challenges, particularly under finite word lengths and limited precision typical of embedded automotive platforms. In this session, Dr. Yuri A. Vershinin (Senior Member IEEE, Assistant Professor, Coventry University) explores the implementation of a square-root decentralized Kalman filter, a numerically stable alternative to conventional estimators for multi-sensor systems.

Drawing from both theoretical modeling and experimental insight, the talk will highlight:

  • How sensor fusion performance degrades under limited computational precision
  • The benefits of square-root algorithms in preserving numerical stability
  • Hardware considerations for implementing robust decentralized filters
  • Lessons for future ADAS and AV architectures leveraging distributed intelligence

Yuri Vershinin

Assistant Professor, Coventry University

Dr. Yuri A. Vershinin joined Coventry University, as Senior Lecturer, Assistant Professor in late 2000 after his research at Aston University, following on from his industrial career. His industrial work experience included digital systems design for automation and control. His recent research has been carried out in the area of self-tuning and adaptive control systems. He has worked in machine vision, image processing and computer graphics. He was the Principal Investigator in several engineering and consultancy projects financed by the EPSRC and industrial organisations. He led the scientific research group working on the project financed by the European Union Commission, which includes 19 partner organizations from 12 countries.

Coventry University

Coventry University is a global, modern university with a mission of Creating Better Futures. We were founded by entrepreneurs and industrialists in 1843 as the Coventry School of Design and we continue to have strong links with the public and private sector, providing job-ready graduates with the skills and creative thinking to improve their communities. With a proud tradition of innovative teaching and learning, Coventry University has world-class campus facilities, the UK’s first standalone 5G network and a digital community of learning. Our students are part of a global network that has 50,000 learners studying Coventry University degrees in more than 40 different countries and partnerships with 150 higher education providers worldwide. We have greatly increased our research capacity and ability with a focus on impactful research, delivered for and with partners, to address real-world challenges and support business and communities to develop and grow. Over two centuries, we have flourished in Coventry and Coventry University Group now also delivers access to our range of high-quality services and partnerships through bases in London, Scarborough, Belgium, Poland, Egypt, Dubai, Singapore and Africa. In recent years, we have won many awards and vastly improved our rankings in the league tables that matter to students. We were ranked top 30 in the world for the ratio of our international students in the QS World University Rankings 2022, were shortlisted for University of the Year in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021, and were named Joint first Modern University for Careers Prospects in the Guardian University Guide 2022
